The Complete Guide to the Powerful Dua from Surah Al-Imran

Quranic Dua

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً ۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ

Transliteration

Rabbi hab li min-ladunka dhurriyydtan tayyylbatan, innaka sami'u-d-du'a'

Translation

"My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good (pure) offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of (all) supplication."

Surah Al-Imrān (3), Ayah 38

Who originally made this dua in the Quran?

This beautiful dua was made by the Prophet Zakariya (AS) as mentioned in Surah Al-Imran, Verse 38. After years of childlessness and advanced age, Prophet Zakariya turned to Allah with this heartfelt supplication. His dua was accepted, and he was blessed with Prophet Yahya (John the Baptist), who became a righteous prophet of Allah.

What does "tayyibatan" mean in this dua?

The word "tayyibatan" (طَيِّبَةً) is rich in meaning and encompasses:

  • Pure and wholesome - Free from physical and spiritual defects
  • Good and righteous - Possessing excellent character and faith
  • Pleasant and blessed - A source of joy and comfort to parents
  • Healthy and sound - In both body and mind

By using this word, Prophet Zakariya wasn't just asking for a child, but for a child who would be a comprehensive blessing in every aspect.

When is the best time to recite this dua?

While this dua can be made at any time, certain times increase its acceptance:

During Sujood

The closest a servant is to Allah is during prostration.

After Obligatory Prayers

Make it part of your regular post-prayer supplications.

Last Third of the Night

During Tahajjud when Allah descends to the lowest heaven.

Can this dua be made for specific qualities in children?

Yes, absolutely. While reciting this dua, you can also make specific requests for your future children. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that we should be specific in our duas. You can ask for:

Good Health

Strong Faith

Quran Memorization

Righteous Character

Remember to combine your dua with practical efforts and trust in Allah's perfect timing and wisdom.

What should we do while waiting for the dua to be accepted?

The period of waiting for a dua to be answered is a test of faith and patience. Here are important actions to take:

  1. Continue making dua consistently - Don't give up or lose hope
  2. Increase your good deeds - Charity, prayer, and kindness
  3. Seek forgiveness regularly - Purify your heart and intentions
  4. Trust Allah's timing - He knows what's best for you
  5. Take practical steps - Consult medical professionals if needed
  6. Study parenting in Islam - Prepare yourself spiritually and practically

Remember: Prophet Zakariya was an old man when his dua was answered. Allah's wisdom transcends our understanding of time and circumstances.

The Spiritual Significance of This Dua

This dua from Surah Al-Imran represents more than just a request for children—it's a comprehensive supplication for righteous offspring who will be a source of ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah) for their parents.

The dua teaches us three important lessons:

  • Humility before Allah - Recognizing that children are a gift from Him alone
  • Quality over quantity - Asking for "tayyib" (pure, good) offspring rather than just any children
  • Recognition of Allah's attributes - Acknowledging that He hears all supplications

Prophetic Guidance

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, knowledge that is benefited from, and a righteous child who prays for him." (Muslim)
