Qaida Lesson 3: Understanding Harakat (Short Vowels)

You have learned the letters. Now, let's give them sound! In Noorani Qaida Lesson 3, we introduce Harakat (Movements). These are the short vowels that tell us how to pronounce a letter.

Without Harakat, Arabic letters are just consonants (like B, T, K). Harakat turns them into sounds like "Ba", "Ti", "Ku".

ـــَ

Fatha (Zabar)

A slanted dash on top of the letter.

Sound: "A"

Example: بَ = Ba
ـــِ

Kasra (Zer)

A slanted dash below the letter.

Sound: "I" (as in 'Sit')

Example: بِ = Bi
ـــُ

Damma (Pesh)

A small loop on top of the letter.

Sound: "U" (as in 'Put')

Example: بُ = Bu
Teacher's Tip: The most common mistake beginners make is stretching the sound (e.g., saying "Baaaa" instead of a short "Ba"). Keep it short and sharp!
