Dua Between Two Prostrations

The Prophet's Comprehensive Supplication for Spiritual and Worldly Needs

In the sacred moments between the two prostrations (sajdah) during prayer, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught us a powerful supplication that encompasses all human needs. This concise yet comprehensive dua serves as a spiritual anchor, connecting the believer directly with Allah's mercy and grace.

The Prophet (ﷺ) consistently recited this dua in the sitting position between the two sajdahs. It beautifully balances our worldly concerns with spiritual aspirations.
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَعَافِنِي وَاهْدِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي
Allahumma ighfir li warhamni wa'afini wahdini warzuqni
"O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, grant me well-being, guide me and provide for me."

Meaning and Significance

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي (O Allah, forgive me)

This opening plea acknowledges our human imperfections and seeks Allah's forgiveness. It represents spiritual cleansing and the recognition that we constantly need divine pardon for our shortcomings. The act of seeking forgiveness purifies the heart and prepares us to receive Allah's blessings.

وَارْحَمْنِي (Have mercy on me)

After seeking forgiveness, we ask for Allah's boundless mercy. This request acknowledges our complete dependence on divine compassion rather than our own merits. Allah's mercy encompasses all aspects of our existence - our health, relationships, struggles, and ultimate salvation.

وَعافِنِي (Grant me well-being)

The request for 'afiyah (well-being) is comprehensive. It includes physical health, mental peace, financial security, and protection from harm. This holistic concept of well-being covers our entire existence in this world and prepares us for the hereafter.

وَاهْدِنِي (Guide me)

Guidance is the most precious gift we can seek. This request covers both initial guidance to Islam and ongoing guidance in our daily decisions. It acknowledges that without divine direction, even the most intelligent human efforts can lead astray.

وَارْزُقْنِي (Provide for me)

The final request encompasses all forms of provision - material sustenance, knowledge, righteous family, and spiritual nourishment. It acknowledges Allah as the ultimate provider and expresses trust in His perfect timing and wisdom.
