Janazah Dua for Adults
Allahummaghfir lihayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa sagheerina wa kabeerina, wa thakarina wa unthana. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa'ahyihi 'alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fatawaffahu 'alal-eeman. Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu, wa la tudillana ba'dahu

"O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our men and our women. O Allah, whoever among us You keep alive, keep them alive upon Islam, and whoever You cause to die, cause them to die upon faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not let us go astray after him."

Key Points to Remember
  • The Janazah prayer is a collective obligation (fard kifayah)
  • Performed standing without rukoo or sujood
  • Four takbeers with specific supplications
  • Men should stand closest to the deceased
  • Women may pray separately behind men
  • Performed before burial but can be made up later

Important: The Janazah prayer is valid only if performed by Muslims who have reached puberty. The deceased must have been a Muslim.

Step-by-Step Guide to Performing Janazah Prayer

The Janazah prayer has four takbeers (saying "Allahu Akbar") with specific supplications for each position. Here is the complete method:

1
First Takbeer

Begin with "Allahu Akbar" and recite Surah Al-Fatihah silently. Then seek refuge with Allah from Shaytan.

2
Second Takbeer

Say "Allahu Akbar" and send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) as you would in the final tashahhud of regular prayer.

3
Third Takbeer

Say "Allahu Akbar" and make dua for the deceased using the prescribed supplication provided above.

4
Fourth Takbeer

Say "Allahu Akbar", pause briefly, then say "Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah" to the right and then to the left to conclude the prayer.

Note: If the deceased is a child under puberty, a different dua is recited: "O Allah, make him/her a forerunner for his parents, a treasure, a reward, and an intercessor whose intercession will be accepted."

Significance of the Janazah Prayer

The funeral prayer serves several important purposes in Islam:

It's the last communal service Muslims can perform for their deceased brother or sister in faith.

Intercession

The prayer serves as intercession for the deceased, seeking Allah's forgiveness and mercy.

Community Bond

It strengthens community ties as Muslims gather to support the bereaved family.

Reminder of Mortality
